The single most common cause of apparent "not heating" on Eastside spas is a flow error — the control system detecting insufficient water circulation and refusing to run the heater as a safety precaution. The display shows FLO, FL, or a similar code. This is not a heater failure; it's a circulation problem causing the heater to shut itself off.
On the Eastside, the overwhelming majority of FLO errors are caused by a dirty or clogged filter cartridge. Pacific Northwest organic debris — leaves, pollen, moss spores — loads filters faster here than in drier climates. Remove the filter and run the spa briefly without it. If the FLO error clears and heating resumes, filter cleaning or replacement is the fix. Never leave the spa running long-term without a filter — this is diagnostic only.
In hard-water markets, the most common element failure mode is calcium scale buildup creating hot spots that burn out the wire. This doesn't happen in Eastside soft water. Eastside heater elements fail by different mechanisms: wire fatigue from thermal cycling (expanding and contracting through thousands of heat/cool cycles), corrosion from aggressive low-calcium water attacking metal surfaces, and physical damage from extended operation against insufficient flow.
The practical difference: Eastside heater elements last significantly longer than in hard-water markets (8–12 years vs 3–6 years), but when they do fail, the failure is usually total and sudden rather than the gradual performance decline that scale-damaged elements show. A heater that worked yesterday and doesn't work today — with no FLO error — is a classic Eastside element failure pattern.
If the filter is clean and the element tests OK (resistance within spec), the high-limit sensor and pressure switch are the next diagnostic targets. The high-limit sensor shuts the heater off when it detects excessive temperature at the element surface — if the sensor has drifted out of calibration, it may trip prematurely even when water temperature is normal. The pressure switch confirms water flow before allowing heater operation — if it's stuck in the "no flow" position, the heater won't run regardless of actual flow.
Both are common failure points on Eastside spas, particularly on systems over 8 years old. They're relatively inexpensive parts that we carry for most Balboa and Gecko systems.
If flow is adequate, the element is intact, and the safety devices check out, the heater relay on the control board may have failed. The relay is the switching component that connects the heater circuit when the control system calls for heat. Relay failure is common on older boards — the relay contacts wear from repeated switching cycles and eventually fail in the open position (heater won't run) or the closed position (heater runs continuously, which trips the high-limit). Board-level diagnosis requires the right test equipment; call us if you've ruled out the other causes.
