Most hot tub maintenance guides are written for the national average — which means they're calibrated for moderate climates and moderate water hardness. The Pacific Northwest Eastside has neither. Cedar River water is among the softest urban water supplies in the country, and the Eastside's marine climate creates specific maintenance requirements that national guides don't address.
Cedar River water delivered to Kirkland, Bellevue, and Redmond typically tests below 50 PPM calcium hardness — classified as "soft" by any water quality standard. For hot tub owners, this creates a genuinely easier chemistry environment than the national average. Calcium scale — the white deposit that clogs jets, coats heating elements, and gunks up pump impellers in hard-water markets — doesn't form here. Eastside heater elements last 8–12 years routinely; the same element in Eastern Washington might last 3–5 before calcium scale causes burnout.
The complication: very soft water is corrosive. Water below 150 PPM calcium is considered "aggressive" — it will slowly leach calcium from spa surfaces (the shell, grouting, and equipment components) to satisfy its mineral deficit. This means Eastside spa owners need to add calcium hardness to their fill water, targeting 150–250 PPM. It's counterintuitive — adding calcium to already-soft water — but necessary to protect the shell and equipment from corrosion.

The standard recommendation is every 3–4 months. In soft Cedar River water with good chemistry management, Eastside owners frequently achieve 4–5 months between drains. The indicator to drain: when total dissolved solids (TDS) exceeds 1,500 PPM above source water TDS. Soft water actually manages TDS more efficiently than hard water because you're not constantly battling calcium precipitation — but the organic loading from the Pacific Northwest environment adds to TDS at a higher rate than arid climates.
