Weak Hot Tub Jets in the Pacific Northwest — What's Actually Happening

← Back to Blog

Weak jets are a common complaint on Eastside hot tubs — and the causes here differ from what hard-water guides describe. Cedar River soft water means calcium scale isn't clogging your jets. The Pacific Northwest's organic environment is the more likely culprit.

Filter — The First Check Every Time

Uniformly weak jets across all zones almost always point to the filter before any other component. The spa pump is working, the plumbing is open, but restricted flow through a clogged filter limits what reaches the jets. Pacific Northwest organic debris — leaves, moss, pollen, and the fine particulate from the surrounding fir and cedar forest — loads filters faster in the Eastside wet season than in drier climates. A filter that would last 6–8 weeks between cleanings in Arizona may need cleaning every 3–4 weeks in Kirkland during fall leaf drop.

Remove the filter and run the spa briefly without it. If jets return to full strength immediately, filter cleaning or replacement is the complete fix. The difference in jet power with and without a clogged filter is dramatic and makes this diagnostic test definitive.

Biofilm in Jet Bodies — An Eastside-Specific Issue

In soft Cedar River water, calcium scale is not the jet obstruction cause — but biofilm can be. The Eastside's warm, wet environment is favorable for biofilm formation inside jet bodies and plumbing. Biofilm — the slippery coating of bacterial and organic matter that forms on wet surfaces — accumulates inside the venturi passages of jet bodies, partially blocking the narrow orifices that create jet pressure. The symptom: jets that are weaker than they used to be, with a slight musty smell when running.

Removing jet bodies and cleaning them with a diluted bleach solution or dedicated spa jet cleaner dissolves biofilm. This is also the time to inspect jet body o-rings — biofilm growth on sealing surfaces is corrosive to rubber and accelerates o-ring wear. On Eastside spas used year-round, cleaning jet bodies annually is worthwhile maintenance.

Air Lock After Refill

If jets stopped working immediately after a drain and refill, air lock is the cause. Air trapped in the plumbing prevents the pump impeller from moving water. The pump runs and sounds normal but produces no flow. Loosen the pump union slightly until water appears, then retighten. Run the pump briefly to purge remaining air. On Eastside spas with complex plumbing configurations (common on larger Jacuzzi and Hot Spring models), multiple air pockets may need to be purged from different locations.

Pump Impeller Wear

If filter and biofilm aren't the issue, pump impeller wear becomes the diagnosis. Impeller wear reduces pump output gradually over years of operation — so gradually that owners often don't notice the decline until jet performance has dropped significantly. Worn impellers can't be easily inspected without disassembly; pump output can be measured at the jet face with a flow meter. If output is significantly below spec for the pump model, impeller replacement or pump replacement is the fix.
