Balboa and Gecko control systems power the majority of residential hot tubs in the Pacific Northwest. Their error codes tell you what the system has detected — but the causes in Eastside soft water are often different from what national guides assume. Here's what each code typically means for Kirkland, Bellevue, and Redmond spa owners.
FLO means the flow switch or pressure switch doesn't detect adequate water movement through the heater. On Eastside spas, the dominant cause is a dirty filter — Pacific Northwest organic debris (leaves, pollen, moss, organic particulate from the surrounding fir and cedar environment) loads filters faster than in drier climates. Clean or replace the filter first before any other diagnosis.
Secondary Eastside FLO causes: a partially closed diverter valve, air trapped in the plumbing after a refill, or a failing circulation pump impeller. If FLO persists after filter replacement, call for service. The flow switch itself can fail — this is more common on older Balboa systems where the switch paddle becomes fouled with biofilm.
OH means water temperature has exceeded the high-temperature threshold (typically 108–112°F). On the Eastside, this is rare in winter but can occur on the few genuinely hot summer days — particularly on Sammamish Plateau where south-facing spas absorb significant solar heat. Let the spa cool with the cover removed. If OH occurs repeatedly without obvious solar heat loading, a temperature sensor reading inaccurately is the likely cause.
The HH code indicates the high-limit sensor at the heater element has tripped — different from the OH water temperature code. In Eastside spas, HH is often caused by low flow past the element (clogged filter creating a hot spot at the element surface) or by a high-limit sensor that has drifted out of calibration. In soft Cedar River water, scale on the element surface is not a cause here — unlike hard-water markets where scale-insulated hot spots are the dominant HH trigger.
Sensor errors indicate the control board can't read a temperature sensor accurately. On Eastside spas, sensor failures are often corrosion-related — the soft, slightly aggressive Cedar River water attacks metal sensor components faster than water with higher mineral content. A sensor that shows intermittent SN errors before becoming consistently faulted is showing the progression of corrosion at the sensor tip or wiring connections.
The ICE code (or similar freeze protection indicator on some systems) means the control system has detected ambient temperature near freezing and is automatically running the pump to prevent plumbing freeze. This is normal protective behavior. The code clears when ambient temperature rises. If ICE appears in warm weather, the ambient temperature sensor may have failed and is reading inaccurately.
DRY means the pressure switch or flow sensors don't detect water at the heater — the control system is preventing the heater from running dry and burning out. Restore adequate water level and flow. If DRY persists with adequate water, the pressure switch has failed and is stuck in the "dry" position. This is a straightforward part replacement on most Balboa and Gecko systems.
