Maintaining these spas on Eastside soft water requires some brand-specific knowledge.
Many Eastside Hot Spring spas run the FreshWater salt system — a titanium cartridge that generates chlorine from salt, reducing the need for manual chlorine addition. In soft Cedar River water, the FreshWater system generally works well, but the soft water's low mineral content means the salt level needs more careful monitoring. The system is calibrated for a specific salt concentration; soft water that's had salt added can read differently on standard test strips than the same salt concentration in harder water.
FreshWater cartridges need replacement annually regardless of use — the titanium coating that generates chlorine degrades with time, not just with cycles. Eastside owners who don't replace cartridges on schedule find the system generating less chlorine than expected and compensating with manual additions that defeat the purpose of the salt system.
Older Hot Spring models with the ACE (Advanced Comfort Experience) salt-based sanitization system have similar soft-water considerations. The ACE cell generates chlorine electrolytically from salt — and the soft Cedar River water means calcium levels may be at the low end of the system's operating range. Maintain calcium hardness at 150–200 PPM specifically for ACE system operation; below 100 PPM can affect cell performance and longevity.
Hot Spring models include a continuous-duty circulation pump (distinct from the jet pumps) that runs 24/7 to maintain filtration and heating. This pump is a critical component — failure causes water quality to decline rapidly and can trip the system into error mode. In Eastside soft water, circulation pump issues are typically mechanical (bearing wear, impeller degradation) rather than scale-related.
