The majority of residential hot tubs on the Eastside run either a Balboa Water Group or Gecko Alliance control system — the "brains" that manage heating, filtration cycles, jet activation, and safety functions. Understanding which system your spa has affects parts sourcing, repair costs, and what a technician needs to bring on the service call.
Balboa is the dominant control system manufacturer in the North American residential hot tub market — found in Hot Spring, Sundance, Jacuzzi (many models), Caldera, Marquis, and numerous other brands. The Balboa VS series and BP series boards are the most common we encounter on Eastside service calls. Balboa's advantage: the widest parts availability of any spa control manufacturer. Sensors, flow switches, topside controls, and circuit boards for Balboa systems are stocked by most hot tub parts distributors.
Balboa's BP system uses a "plug and play" wiring architecture that makes component swapping straightforward — sensors and the topside control plug into the board directly without wiring. This reduces service time and the cost of component replacement compared to hardwired alternatives.
Gecko is the primary alternative to Balboa in the North American market — found in Arctic Spa, Beachcomber, and various other brands. The SSPA, in.yj, and in.xe series are the Gecko boards most common on Eastside spas. Gecko systems are known for robust build quality and reliability, but parts availability is somewhat narrower than Balboa — some Gecko-specific components require ordering from specialized distributors rather than general hot tub supply chains.
Gecko error codes use a different system than Balboa — what reads as "FLO" on a Balboa display may appear as "FL1," "FL2," or "Prh" on a Gecko system depending on the exact fault. Understanding which system you have before troubleshooting prevents misdiagnosis from using Balboa-specific guides on a Gecko system.
Open the equipment bay on your spa and look at the main circuit board. Both Balboa and Gecko prominently display their brand name on the board itself. The topside control (the panel at water level where you adjust temperature and activate jets) also typically carries the manufacturer's branding. If your spa is from a major brand — Hot Spring, Sundance, Jacuzzi, Caldera — the brand's documentation will specify which control system is installed.
Mildly. Balboa system parts are generally slightly less expensive and faster to source. For most common repairs — sensors, flow switches, heater elements, topside controls — the price difference is modest.
